See Oceans. Save Oceans.
By seeing Oceans during opening week, moviegoers will be making a meaningful difference for our world’s oceans and the species that depend on them for survival. In honor of each moviegoer, Disneynature will help establish new marine protected areas in The Bahamas with The Nature Conservancy, one of the largest conservation organizations in the world. These areas will contain miles of vital coral reefs that provide natural habitat, nurseries and feeding grounds for hundreds of marine species.
Coral reefs are the foundation of a healthy ocean environment. Many of the Earth’s most charismatic species—including dolphins, sea turtles and a wide range of fish–could not survive without the food, shelter and sanctuary coral reefs provide. If the reefs die, so too will life in the Caribbean as we know it today. In fact, some scientists estimate that the coral reefs of the Caribbean could be gone within 40 years without a network of well-managed marine protected areas, such as those being created with the help of The Nature Conservancy and Disneynature.
The Coral Reefs of The Bahamas
The 700 islands that comprise The Bahamas contain 30% of the total reef area in the Atlantic Ocean, making it an important site for new marine protected areas. Like most other tropical islands, the coral reefs of The Bahamas are under threat from natural stresses as well as damaging human practices.Through its “Adopt a Coral Reef” program, The Nature Conservancy is working to protect the coral reefs in The Bahamas and other important locations throughout the Caribbean and around the world. As a leading global conservation organization, The Nature Conservancy manages more than 100 marine conservation projects in 31 countries and in all U.S. coastal states.
